Cedar size
and training

Training size

Perhaps because a cedar hedge costs much less than a fence, it is the number one solution adopted by many homeowners. And because of the height it can reach, the privacy it provides is second to none.

However, a bushy hedge does not benefit anyone who does not have it trimmed every year. An annual maintenance is indeed essential for this.

Can we prune anytime?

To the subtitled question, the answer is: No, cedar hedge trimming does not happen all the time. First of all, it is not recommended in extreme heat. In addition, the period from July 1st to September 15th is the optimal period.

Not everyone can benefit from appointments during this ideal period, however. That is why an early booking is a wise precaution. Others place fixed annual appointments a few years in advance. This is very ingenious.

Emondage Drummondville knows how to offer your hedge the services that will make it beautiful and healthy. Our specialists have the experience and knowledge required.

How to prune the cedars?

As soon as new shoots appear, it is advisable to prune. The pruning is more delicate however than it may seem at first glance. Indeed, it is strongly recommended to cut only one third of the length of the shoots. When circumstances allow it, it is possible to go as far as half. However, it is imperative not to cut more than half, because if you cut more than half, it could put an end to the growth of your cedars!

It is also important to make sure that the cedars have grown high enough before cutting off their heads. Until then, only the side branches are cut. It is important to know what knowledge to apply in terms of pruning. Doing it yourself without having it is not without risks. Our experts are well aware of what is and is not allowed for successful results.

Why bother to prune your cedars?

If you are among those who doubt the importance of pruning your cedar hedge annually, at least know that you are not alone. But here are the reasons for this annual maintenance:

-The development of your trees is better controlled.
-Your hedge is healthier.
-What's more, it's provided to your liking!

Training size

Training size is one of our little known services. It is part of the long term interviews. The goal is to come to structure a plant specimen or to give it a particular shape. It is advisable to start when the tree is still very young. It is easy to understand why: plants are like us humans, they heal better when they are young and they do what is asked of them more easily.

Also, whether you want to straighten the stature of an arboreal tree or the healing process after a cut, everything goes better on small branches than on larger ones. Another point is that the risk of corollary problems is then less important as well. So, if you start early, you will have more time to reach your goal.

But, as with hedges, why should we make training sizes? First of all, you should know that they help fruit growers to produce more fruit in greater abundance. At Emondage Drummondville, our specialists have the knowledge and know-how to help fruit growers in Quebec. They also know how to perform techniques adapted to a particular species of fruit tree or other trees.

Other motivations behind a training pruning can be to obtain a particular overall look or that the shape of the branch casts a shadow in the future as you wish. It is that you could feed the project to install swings or to compose a small peaceful oasis. The technique of the training size requires more precision, however. So, it is important that our expert goes on site to see your expectations and see your trees.
